Greening Belize Initiative

What is the Greening Belize Initiative?

The Greening Belize Initiative is a national program launched by the Government of Belize with the goal of planting one million trees across the country by 2031. The initiative focuses on restoring degraded landscapes, increasing forest cover, and strengthening climate resilience through sustainable land management and community participation.

The program is led by the Belize Forest Department and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management, with support from the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme. The initiative also supports Belize’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the Bonn Challenge, which includes restoring more than 286,000 acres of degraded land across the country.

The Greening Belize Initiative encourages participation from communities, schools, organizations, NGOs, and other partners across Belize. Key components of the initiative include community partnerships, tree planting activities, microfinancing opportunities, and a mobile application that helps track planting efforts and progress nationwide.

Tidal Legacy Foundation is proud to be one of the first organizations registered under the Greening Belize Initiative and the first to begin planting under the program. Our first planting session under the foundation marked the beginning of this journey, with 11 initial trees planted as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and restoration. Thank you to all the wonderful mothers in Hopkins Village who showed up to be apart of the first planting session.

This is only the beginning for us. Follow the journey as we continue working toward a greener Belize.
